Improvements and persistent biases in the southeast tropical Atlantic in CMIP models

چکیده

Abstract State-of-the-art climate models simulate warmer than observed sea surface temperatures (SST) in eastern boundary upwelling systems (EBUS), generating biases with profound implications for the simulation of present-day and its future projections. Amongst all EBUS, bias is largest southeastern tropical Atlantic (SETA). Here, we provide a comprehensive evaluation performance SETA Coupled Model Intercomparison Project phase 6 (CMIP6), including fine resolution (HighResMIP) ocean-forced (OMIP) models. We show that remain large CMIP6 but are reduced HighResMIP, OMIP giving best performance. The analysis suggests that, once local forcing errors have been reduced, major source lies equatorial Atlantic. This study shows finer model has helped reduce origin SST further developments physics schemes will be required to make progress.

Tropical Atlantic Biases in CCSM4

This paper focuses on diagnosing biases in the seasonal climate of the tropical Atlantic in the twentiethcentury simulation of the Community Climate System Model, version 4 (CCSM4). The biases appear in both atmospheric and oceanic components. Mean sea level pressure is erroneously high by a few millibars in the subtropical highs and erroneously low in the polar lows (similar to CCSM3). As a re...

AGCM Precipitation Biases in the Tropical Atlantic

Many general circulation models (GCMs) share similar biases in the representation of the intertropical convergence zone (ITCZ) in the Atlantic, even when they are forced with the time series of the observed sea surface temperature (SST). Specifically, they overestimate precipitation in the Southern Hemisphere in boreal spring and in the Caribbean region in boreal summer. The majority of the mod...

Equatorial Atlantic variability and its relation to mean state biases in CMIP 5

2 ABSTRACT Coupled general circulation model (GCM) simulations participating in the Coupled Model Intercomparison Project Phase 5 (CMIP5) are analyzed with respect to their performance in the equatorial Atlantic. In terms of the mean state, 29 out of 33 models examined continue to suffer from serious biases including an annual mean zonal equatorial SST gradient whose sign is opposite to observa...
